Getting Website Traffic

by Kale McClelland

"If you build it, they will come."

Hogwash. This only works in the movies. No matter how beautiful the build, your web-based business will fail if you don't generate enough traffic to your site or sites. How can you get it? By learning how to promote online.

1. SEO is the starting point. SEO or search engine optimization is the core of any good website promotion plan. SEO involves using keywords which are words that are part of an article on a webpage that are specific in describing what is on eht page. There should be inbound or incoming links from relevant sources, and URL submission to the major search engines like Google and Yahoo to let them and the world know that your site exists.

2. Create relationships at social networking sites. A huge part of your promotion will be involved in getting inbound links, which build your reputation with search engines. Many people use public social networks like Facebook, Flickr, YouTube, or community forums to get those links. The trick is including your inbound link with appropriate anchor text on every post you make. However, never post just to get that link out there; every person reading your comment is a potential customer, and your job is to make them like you. How do you feel when someone barges into a conversation and tries to sell you a vacuum cleaner? Same thing.

3. Article marketing has long been the mainstay of any good promotion campaign. Give them away. Put them in article directories where others can read and use them. Each article picked up has a backlink or inbound link to your site. If somebody on some other site reads your article, likes it and wants to learn more, they will click on the link at the bottom. You, in turn, will receive traffic and potential customers.

Write ebooks and reports and give them away. It's all about information. The power of giving away ebooks builds instant credibility and in each book you can add our website address. If they like the ebook, they will come to your website. It becomes viral, because if they like it, they will pass it on. More ebooks given = more visitors to your website.

5. Get other sites to link to you. Through article marketing, you will get a ton of inbound links. You can also offer other free stuff, ebooks, reports, online tools, free software downloads and more. You may ask to submit on your niche to a another's blog or you can simply comment with backlinks. All of this turns into traffic.

6. Offer free services. Recipes, calorie counters, and exercise charts are perfect content for a weight loss site because people will keep coming back to use the tools. Automated tarot reading and astrology charts work well for paranormal sites. What can you offer?

7. Create an affiliate program. Affiliate marketers are like a freelance sales force - you don't pay them until they make a sale. Not only do you sell product, but they include a well-formatted link back to your site on their own sites.

8. Contests and games are real winners. There are tons of contest clearing sites. If you let them know you have a contest, they will link back to you. Come up with a prize related to your niche so that the traffic that arrives to sign up, will be interested in what you have to sell.

There are plenty of other ways to generate traffic for your site, but this will get you started. Remember, if you ADVERTISE it, they will come. And come. And come.

1 Way Link Building And Seo

By Peter Brittain

There are genuine ways to enhance your search engine rankings and build credibility in your chosen area of expertise or niche. Improved search engine rankings will generate leads for your business and get you and your business the recognition amongst the masses around the world. One such way to build credibility is called "Article Submission"

Article submission is not something you may be hearing for the first time, in fact it is a method that has been tested in the crucible of time. The only drawback article submission has is that it is a tedious process. The process involves finding article directories and completing all the criteria for submission. However, article submission is a powerful tool to increase search engine rankings.

You need to focus on this tried and tested principle of optimizing websites, while one more method that needs focus is getting high quality 1way links to your website. Your website rank is directly proportional to the number of quality 1way links pointing to your website. The more links you have the higher your page website is ranked by search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and MSN. So irrespective of the fact that link building is tedious you cannot escape it and link building has to be done.

Although there are many tricks and tactics you can use for short term gain it is recommended that you avoid spending valuable time on such things and instead concentrate all your efforts on figuring out the best way get other websites link to your site without you having to link back to them. This is 1 way link building. 1 way links is the sure shot way to secure higher rank s in Google, Yahoo! And MSN.

This may sound easy but is quite a task. The first step is finding website directories and then begins the tedious process of submitting your website to them. However, the effort eventually pays, as you see your website rankings improve dramatically. You may choose to submit your articles directly to these directories manually or have someone do it for you, however, there are some charges involved.

Articles written should be unique and short about 500 words, also include your link along with an interesting description. The key is to provide useful content to the directories that will add value to their clients. Generally it is a good idea to write articles on topics that are your niche and include your name and your company name in it along with the URL. Also use appropriate keyword containing link text. Superior content is the best way to attract eyeballs. Another strategy you could use is to license content from your website in exchange for a link to your site.

Although article submission has been around for some time and many people associated with SEO are aware of it, it is still neglected due to the extraordinary time it consumes. However if done diligently it is the best way to build 1 way links.

What Newbies in Internet Marketing Should Know About SEO

By Nathalie Fiset

Do you know SEO? It doesn't matter whether you're a newbie in internet marketing or a seasoned one - SEO has a lot to do with your survival and success online. In fact, ask anyone who knows the ropes and they'll tell you that a large part of their efforts are focused on ensuring that they use SEO principles to attract traffic, bring in more customers and eventually sell more. Learn what SEO entails and how you can integrate it into your internet marketing business:

The art and science of SEO

SEO stands for search engine optimization, the process used by internet marketers, website owners, online businesses and bloggers in order to produce content that will be relevant to search queries performed by their target market. The more a website and its content are optimized for search engines, the more likely they will appear high on search engine results.

An optimized site selling handmade herbal soaps, for example, will appear in the results listing for queries involving keywords like 'herbal soaps' and 'handmade soaps'. If the optimization efforts are excellent, it can even appear with generalized searches involving the key phrase 'herbal products'. It all depends on the type of SEO effort the site owner or Web master used to make sure that the site appears high in the listing.

What's with the results page?

The results page is the web page that appears before you each time you make a search through a search engine such as Google, AskJeeves, AOL, MSN, Yahoo! or some other similar site offering the same service. That page will list the links to sites or documents that are relevant to your search.

If you look closely, you'll find that a search for 'acne treatment', for example, will come up with millions of hits. In theory, you can go through all these links to find what you're looking for. However, with the limited time and patience you have, you'll probably check out the links on the first page of the results listing, starting from the top. Once you find what you're looking for, would you still bother with the second or third pages? Definitely not. That is why any experienced internet marketer will tell you that the priceless real property is found on the first page of results pages. That is where you want the link to your site to appear.

So what made the links on the first results page appear there? It's SEO. These links are listed according to their relevance - the more relevant and reliable the link is, the more likely it will appear high on the page. That is what good SEO does - it has the power to grab your intended audience's attention while providing them with quality content at the same time.

Good SEO and Bad SEO

Many newbies in internet marketing think search engines can be tricked into giving them the first few slots on the results page. What they do is bombard their content with keywords, hoping that would do the trick.

Unfortunately for them and fortunately for surfers, there is such thing as excess being harmful to health. The same holds true for SEO efforts. In the past, misguided site owners and copywriters tried to abuse the system by inserting key words and key phrases repeatedly throughout the content and key areas on their website. This is called keyword stuffing, something that most readers find have little use to their search purposes and offering little to zero value. Writing content for a 500-word article, for example, then assailing your reader's senses by making sure the keyword appears in over 40% of the write-up makes the write-up extremely ridiculous and desperate.

Implementing SEO in internet marketing

SEO is actually based on a simple concept - using related keywords and key phrases in a way that makes the relevance of the content noticeable to search engines. However, it does demand so much more than just cleverly placed words within a group of paragraphs. Search engines are wired in such a way that they don't only look for the relevance in your website - they also spot the value of a well-written article and the quality of the internal and external links built into it. It's really about being relevant and popular at the same time.

So how can a newbie implement SEO in internet marketing? Research. It's important to understand which search queries your website will respond to and which keywords and key phrases to use that will ultimately result to a click on your site or a conversion. Look for keywords to use with your website's content - from the title to the content to the links - that will help you hone in on your target market. And yes, do offer real, honest-to-goodness quality content. Spend time and effort producing write-ups that your visitors can actually use and build links to sites that give your reputation a boost.

What Backlinks Can Do To Your Site

By Ren B

You got yourself a new site but still can't figure out how to be found online. Two things are very important to be found online: good content and backlinks. The first one will give people reason to link to you and the second one is the real act of it. Understanding how backlinks work is vital to SEO (Search Engine Optimization) and that's what we will be talking about here.

Backlink is, literally, a link (on another URL) pointing to your site. So, if someone likes your content (or design, or...) and links to it on his/her own site, you get a backlink. I guess you now have an idea on why the number of inbound links is so important to search engines: backlinks tell search engines that your site ROCKS. So it should rank higher than the other crappy ones.

But there are backlinks and backlinks. Backlinks from small bad-ranking sites are nearly worthless, as backlinks from great sites give your own a big nitro-boost on search engines result pages (SERP). Backlinks from sites that relate to your own content are worthy more than random linking. And, of course, backlinks from spam pages can ruin your site ranking.

How can you get backlinks?

Well, remember to do your homework: good content and great networking! Most of the time, meeting "normal" people is better than meeting the big fishes, since you'll have a better opportunity to get to know them. On the way of getting new friends on related sites, the probability that they will link you back is considerably bigger than getting a link from the bigger ones online. Create content that's worth linking to, create buzz, stumble, digg it, delicious, everything! Register on forums and get the opportunity to include your own site on your signature (that's important!)

The whole point of backlinks is to get your site better ranked, but remember: you still need to create good content!

IReviewYou.com offers you the opportunity to get your site reviewed, with, of course... backlinks!

How Can Lower Page Rank Web Pages Achieve Better Search Engine Positions?

By Jon C

I have been using dawjee to analyze search terms for a while now - toying with keyword suggestions and looking for interesting patterns or anomalies in the result data (e.g. pages with query string data often report an erroneous Google Page Rank of zero).

After discussing some findings with a colleague, I realised a lot of what I'm learning will also be of use and/or interest to other webmasters. I shall therefore catalogue all future findings in a series of articles / blog posts.

This first article shall observe the current Google results for the term "dandruff".

At the time of writing, the top 3 results are:

Position 1
Title : Dandruff - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
PR 6

Position 2
Title: Dandruff - MayoClinic.com
PR 4

Position 3
Title: Dandruff
URL: coolnurse.com PR 5

(PR = Google Page Rank)

What's interesting is that P2 (Position 2) has a lower PR (Google Page Rank) than P3 (Position 3). Both web pages contain Dandruff in their TITLE tags and urls. So a cursory glance would suggest that P3 should have a better (i.e. lower) rank than P2.

From taking a look at both pages, both are on topic and contain genuine information about dandruff. P2 is only a small page, and is part of a full article (i.e. many small interlinked dandruff pages). While P3 is a full article on a single page.

The keyword densities are 4.86% for P2 and 6.39% for P3. Neither page makes obvious use of contrived keyword stuffing.

However, if we drill down into the data for each result (use the small magnifying glass next to each result, or follow the link the Resources list below), we'll find some significant differences in their hosts and backlinks.

P2 has 6 Google backlinks, with 4,990 to its host. While P3 has 3 and 270 respectively.

P2 also dwarfs P3 in terms of the number of pages Google has indexed (Pages in Host), and also has a higher host page rank 7 (vs 5 for P3).

To summarize, P2 may have a lower page rank, but it has a few more links and its home page is overwhelmingly more popular than P3's. It is also part of a set of pages about dandruff. Instead of having the full article on a single page, it has been split among many. P2 therefore has several interlinked pages about dandruff.

It therefore appears that the pages hosted on popular (in terms of search engines) web sites can rank better than other pages, even if they have lower Google Page ranks. Splitting up articles into many small pages helps as well.

Getting Started With Keyword Research

By Bradley J Davidson

Detailed keyword research is an essential first step for any online business.

Comprehensive keyword research reports are invaluable tools for conducting effective market research, analysis of the competition, managing a profitable paid internet advertising campaign and creating content for a website.

Good keyword research is also very important as you are building traffic to the website with link building. These, and other search optimization and search marketing activities ,are really only effective after extensive keyword research has been completed.

Once the critical first step of keyword research reporting has been completed you can use this report in several different ways.

There are many situations where you may wish to do a quick check on a keyphrase or you may want to add new keywords that you discover from investigating which search terms your website is found by.

In this way, you will constantly want to be updating these lists with more highly targeted keywords and more. Keywords, search volume, and, most importantly, competition does change over time.

Let's get started by creating a comprehensive list of keywords for our target market niche or business.

First, search Google using a few words relating to your chosen product or niche. At the bottom of each page of results you'll find a few suggested keywords.

Paste all these and the word or words you searched with into notepad. Once you have collected 10 or more keywords and key phrases, save the document.

You now have a good list of seed keywords for use in creating a more detailed keyword list. Now check out Freekeywords.wordtracker. There's no need to create an account.

Copy and paste or type in the first keyword or key phrase on your list. A list of up to 100 keywords will come up based on what you entered. Now, take this list and copy and paste to notepad.

Save this document, giving it a name related to the seed keyword you entered.

From this list of keywords, you can select the hyper linked key phrase and then you are shown a list of up to another 100 keyword phrase for that keyword phrase.

Simply complete the above steps with each list, progressively "drilling down" to the more highly-targeted keywords.

Some of these may be clearly unrelated to your niche or product. Discard them. If there are any real general keywords that may apply in a number of other areas, then discard those, as well.

Once completed, this process should give hundreds, if not thousands of keywords to work with. With this list you can learn much more about your competition and determine the best strategy to market and grow your online business.

In the next article we will discussing using this list find out who's searching for what and how many websites are competing for those potential visitors.

Brad Davidson Writes for http://www.competitionreporting.com about topics related to search engine optimization and search engine marketing. Brad writes about internet marketing to help improve his own knowledge as well as to share what he learns with others who may be interested in keyword research, paid advertising competition, organic search placement results and more.

How To Optimize Your Web Site For Ask

By Karen Scharf

While Ask's share of the search market is comparatively small, it offers some great features that are sure to catch on. Consider grabbing a good ranking now before the word gets out and a tidal wave of webmasters start clamoring for top spots.

When Google "introduced" its universal search model, it grabbed tons of press for its "innovation". Coincidentally, Ask has been using a universal search model since day one. So here's a great place to get your feet wet and, shall I say, "practice" for optimizing for universal search. Consider these tips:

* Optimizing images for Ask's universal search model is a little more complex than simply adding an alt tag. Yes, you still need to use an alt tag, and the alt tag should contain the target keyword. But in addition, the image's actual filename should also contain the keyword AND the page text near the image should include the keyword.

* Create an account at Bloglines and add your blogs and feeds to your profile. Unlike most of their competitors, ranking in Ask Blogs is determined by relevance, not date. So be sure to maximize all your blog posts for your keyword phrases. Another feature of Ask Blogs is the ability to sort by popularity, so stickiness and incoming links become extremely important.

* Ask Mobile is a neat feature that provides mobile users with search results by reformatting websites into one column. Ask Mobile returns local search results to cell phone users (genius, isn't it?), so be sure to include your address with city, state and zip on every page of your site to improve your possibility of being listed. And get yourself listed in Ask City by sending an email to askcitybusiness@help.ask.com. The email should contain the subject Ask City Feedback - Business and should include your business name and full address, your area code and phone number, your web address, your business category, your name and email address. Expect about one month before your listing in Ask City is approved.

* Be sure to submit your sitemap to Ask to ensure your site is thoroughly crawled. Without a sitemap, chances are your deep content will not be indexed by Ask. Put your sitemap in your root folder and add it to your robots.txt file. Then submit it to Ask by typing the following into your browser: http://submissions.ask.com/ping?sitemap=http://www.YOUR-URL.com/sitemap.xml. Obviously, replace YOUR-URL with your own web address.

* Ask provides users with a website preview, so they can glance at the site before clicking the link. To guarantee maximum click throughs, make sure your best content is above the fold and that your site preview looks compelling.

My Top 6 Web Site Marketing Strategies

By Herman Drost

If you don't create a successful strategy for marketing your web site, you can't build a profitable online business. It's therefore imperative to drive thousands of visitors to your web site, then convert them to paying customers. How do you accomplish this?

Use several marketing strategies

Don't put all your eggs into one basket by only employing one marketing strategy. You could see evidence of this during the latest Google update in which many commercial web sites which once had top rankings, dropped out of existence, thus instantly losing sales.

By creating more than one strategy to market your web site, you can soon see which one works the best by attracting the most visitors.

Market with consistency

Set up a clear daily, weekly, monthly and yearly marketing plan for your web site and stick to it. It is the lifeblood of your business.

Test marketing

Continually test all your web site marketing strategies to see which one works the best. Eliminate those that are not profitable.

6 successful marketing strategies:

Search engine optimization

Here are the locations where you should include your most important keywords or keyword phrases:

1. Meta tags (invisible)

Title tag

Description tag

Keyword tag

Alt tag

2. Page content (visible) - Weave your best keywords throughout the content of your pages. Focus on the first 250 words on your page and only use one to three keyword phrases per page of content. Include keywords in your H1 tag (main title) and H2, H3 tags (subheadings) as well as the hyperlinks in your site or and in outgoing links.

Search engines and directories

3. Submit to major search engines - Google is currently the main search engine to get listed in. If you get listed there, you will also get listed in AOL, Netscape, and Yahoo and it's still free. This may change in the near future as the competition heats up. Other free listings also include directories such as ODP. Do a search on Google to seek out your niche directories ie for sunglasses, look for sunglass directories.

Here are the other search engines to submit to:

http://www.searchenginewatch.com/links/article.php/2156221

4. Pay per click (PPC) search engines - if you wish to generate traffic to your web site immediately, set up a Google AdWords or Overture campaign.

http://payperclicksearchengines.com

Email Marketing

5. Create a newsletter - most folks don't buy from you immediately but need to be contacted several times to put them in the buying mood. Place a subscription box on every page of your web site. Send out your newsletter every two weeks to keep in touch with your subscribers. Be sure to include original content (not rehashed content) along with new products you wish to introduce to them.

6. Email Course or tutorial - set up an autoresponder that will deliver quality information over a period of seven days. This means you have multiple chances of contacting your visitor and promote your product or service at the same time.

Affiliate Marketing Training - Keyword Rich Content Basics

By Timothy Prahl

To many, affiliate marketing training pays its greatest dividends when an internet marketer attains first page status, or, ideally, top ranking on the first page of a major search engine. Traffic generated in this manner is known as organic

What does this mean? When you conduct a search on the internet, you enter a word or phrase that you feel describes what you are looking for. After getting in the general area, you can sequentially become more specific until you find information that will provide you with answers. The websites at the top of this first page find themselves in a very favorable position for organic traffic generation.

How did they get there?

For this article, we will focus strictly on keywords ... those same words that you entered into the search to arrive at that page. Keywords, or keyword phrases, are site specific text that the search engines are able to identify. Using a complex (and ever changing) formula, the search engine executed a search of available resources and provided you with a list of sites , from top to bottom, that best represent the solution to your specific search.

So, with this in mind, it is safe to say that the top sites on the first page provided the most keyword related results. Without straying too far from this concept, it needs to be said that the search engine results will also reflect sites directly linked to and similarly rich in the requested keywords. This fact is a key ingredient for the popularity and success of article marketing.

Lesson number 1 then becomes to incorporate relevant, keyword rich content on each of your sites. Don't make this more difficult than it is ... just think backwards. Compile a list of what you would enter into a search to arrive at your site. Then try those words individually, or in combination on a search engine, and note the results (on the page, there will be, say, 1 of 13,000). This tells you that you are looking at the first of 13,000 listings available for that particular inquiry.

Wow, 13,000 ... there ain't know way little ole you could possibly reach the first page, right? WRONG, and this is where you need to do your homework. Remember, the page ranking is not exclusively the result of your 1 site, but also the association with other sites with the same keywords, whether they are yours, or, linked to yours. For example, google ranks sites 0-10 rated primarily on their popularity and traffic. If you published an article at Article Dashboar that was keyword rich in a smaller niche, (say 9,000), you could receive first page status based on Article Dashboard's high page ranking (Google rank = 5). In effect, you were carried 'piggy back' to that ranking.

However, a word of caution. This example can be a bit of a paradox. It's great to see your site on the first page ... but is anybody searching for that page? Remember, the benefit that you're seeking is generating organic traffic ... not bragging rights. :-)

Ok, don't become overwhelmed. Everything that you need to research your keywords is right in front of you ... the Internet. Search for keyword tool ... 1 of 2.2 million. Keyword phrases 1 of 776K. Adword combinations ... 1 of 54K. As you can see, there are plenty of tools to do your keyword research, and a lot of them are FREE.

Another great source for relevant keywords is your competitors. Click on several of the sites on the top page of your target niche. On your browser, click tools, view source. You will now see the html code for this site. Not too far down from the top, you will see Meta names = keywords and a listing of the keywords and phrases associated with this site. Make a list and compare it to your research results. Go - slow - and - be - thorough! Changing marketing trends and new products can turn a previously irrelevant word or phrase into a HOT keyword in a very short period of time. This practice is NOT unethical ... everyone on the Internet can use this technique ... you are NOT taking unfair advantage.

To gage your effectiveness of your keyword content ... yes, do a search. Keyword analyzer ... 1 of 192K. With this tool, you can paste your content onto a page, and you will be given a percentage for your desired keywords. Ideally, you are looking for 2 - 5% density. More IS NOT better ... the search engines can actually penalize your site if they deem you are 'padding' your keywords. :-(

Well, this should get you going in realizing the importance of keyword content when publishing to the net.

Get started ... if you're not providing proper keyword density, you're just singing to an empty room!

Article Marketing - 5 Essential Steps For Success

By Timothy Prahl

Affiliate Marketing training would not be complete without explaining the HUGE upside to Article Marketing. Once implemented, these content specific articles will keep generating traffic literally for years after initial publish.

The internet marketer uses articles to direct traffic to a website or blog where he has a product or information. An article is NOT a sales page ... as such, it WILL BE rejected by the article directories. :-(

In considering utilizing article marketing, there are 5 specific steps required in order to gain benefit from the article.

1. Carefully choose a product or information that is the ultimate focus of your article.

2. Develop quality information regarding your subject. Your goal is to provide enough information for the reader to see the value, but you DON'T want to provide all the answers ... pique their curiosity to learn more.

3. Provide examples, tips, or tutorials to demonstrate how the subject will be beneficial.

4. Expand your points to paint a picture of the process. Be careful to keep your text informative without bordering on a 'sit-down' classroom session.

5. 'Shine your Apple' before submitting. Perform a complete review and edit as necessary.

It is ALWAYS advisable to save your article and walk away for awhile. We all have a tendency to write what we want to hear. Return to your draft and put your "subjective" face on. Get 'out of yourself', apply the basic steps, and see if your draft meets the criteria for the average viewer. Did you clearly define a problem and provide a practical answer or solution?

Does your article 'read' like a sales page? Generally, avoiding the use of first tense ("I") will help to generalize your points. Remember, you are NOT selling anything ... you ARE generating interest in your chosen topic. Keep in mind that your goal is not to appeal to everyone. Make sure that you have identified your target audience, and have provided enough information to grab their attention. Have you clearly defined the problem? Have you suggested a course of action that may offer a solution? Is your information unique, or can it be found in any number of throw away ebooks?
